it all started with a flat file…

This studio transformation was recently featured on Design*Sponge. I wrote a follow-up post answering some of the questions that arose in the comments and also posted a few more images here.

With the help of Mark, I spent the entire last month in major house studio overhaul mode. I had five year’s worth of paperstuffs, random art supplies and countless odds and ends to sort and either discard or organize. It all started with my desire for a flat file, since all of my flatwork and papers were sloppily vertically stored against the wall behind a closet door.

The organization project evolved into ditching my drafting table and our old kitchen table I was using as a desk in favor of clean, white tables easily made out of doors and painted white. Mark built me wall shelves for storing small, framed work and we got them installed yesterday. Now the studio feels so much better, I want to be in here all the time. Just to show you how far it’s come, at one point, it had devolved into this:

Here are some overview shots of the new setup:

Now to start making a mess again.

Lovely makeover and such a large, open space to make a beautiful mess. Great photos too.

    Popped over from DS.

    Enjoy your day.

  2. Faith:

I am so envious of your space! Wowee! Currently my studio resides in the basement of another building with no access to natural light… feels like a dungeon.

  3. Heather:

This is GORGEOUS. And inspiring. Spring and fall find me in a purge-and-clean frame of mind, but I like your point about a major overhaul instead of piecemealing it once again… Right, I’m turning off the PC and getting out the graph paper!

  4. yasemin:

I love the whole studio but I especially adore that paper drawer you have. Can you maybe give me any clues where I can find something like that…or just THAT?

  5. amy:

Yasemin, I got it off of Craigslist. If you keep checking it, you should be able to find one at a decent price.

  6. scottdot:

I love it. But I’m dying to know why there is blue tape and paper all over your display!

  7. amy:

Scott- I was in the middle of a project and couldn’t move the paper (used for tracing). I use blue tape for everything. My brain might just be held together with blue tape:)

  8. Chloe:

Inspriring transformation! Also I love your chair – another craigslist find? Do you happen to know the manufacturer?

  9. ML n LA:

    OMG! for before!
    OMG! for after!
    OMG how I wish!

  10. sara mccracken:

great studio makeover. Did you have to purge a lot? I spend ages then some weeks or months later or one big project and…. it’s back to the before picture! I can always see a use for everything so I get too much “stuff”.. all potential gems , but I can’t tell in advance which will be the “one”
